<p>5HTP will help various conditions such as anxiety, depression, insomnia and weight loss. Some people will get better results than others when using 5HTP, as like many other supplements they work differently on everyone. After 3 months it is best to take a break from 5HTP to see how you feel and re-evaluate.</p>
<p>It makes no difference what you are treating the dosage is always the same, starting with a low amount of 50mg. If you don&#8217;t feel any change after a while then it is safe to increase your dosage to 100mg. I would strongly recommend that you check with your GP if you want to take a higher dosage than this as you can start to feel side effects.</p>
<p>If you are using 5HTP for weight loss, don&#8217;t be alarmed, it&#8217;s no miracle. When Serotonin levels are low we turn to food to help raise it and having that chocolate bar or piece of cake seems to do the trick but also adds the pounds. The way 5HTP works, in this instance, is by stopping the cravings for carbohydrates and fats, therefore acting as a food suppressant. You will still need to cut down on your calorie intake, but hopefully if your Serotonin levels return to normal you will stop craving the wrong foods.</p>
<p>As I have mentioned, there are side effects if taking a high dose, but these are rare. Some side effects that you may feel are nausea, lack of sex drive, stomach cramps and nightmares. At a low dose you are unlikely to notice anything but positive results, but at higher dosages of 300mg and above be aware of how you are feeling and stay alert for any strange feelings. There are a group of people that should not take 5HTP as it can make their condition worse. They are people with high blood pressure, Parkinson&#8217;s disease, lung disease, anorexia, if you are pregnant or suffer with haemophilia.</p>
<p>Also if you are taking anti-depressants, cancer treatment and antibiotics as well as some other drugs then you should not take 5HTP as these will already be increasing your Serotonin levels so in effect you will be overdosing on it which can lead to Serotonin Syndrome which can be very serious.</p>
<p>5HTP does not work overnight. It can take up to 3 weeks to get into your system before you will notice any changes in your condition&#8230; So be patient.</p>
<p>For best results take your allocated dosage an hour or so before going to bed. This will help you to have a good night&#8217;s sleep and allow plenty time for your brain to build up those Serotonin levels so you can tackle the day ahead with confidence.</p>
