Five Foods For Thought

December 14th, 2009 Posted in Fitness

One of the biggest problems causing people to gain weight is the tendency to overeat. Why does this happen? Well many times people feel hungry because they eat to fast. The faster we eat, the less time we give our brains to process that fact that we are eating. Therefore, we end up hungry again in little to no time.

One of the best ways to lose weight is too choose foods that take longer to chew and eat thus forcing us to slow down and allowing our body to signal our brain when our hunger is satisfied. Keeping this in mind, here are 5 foods that will slow down your eating and help you to achieve that weight loss.

Water

A lot of times, when we think we are hungry, the truth is that we are actually thirsty. It is difficult for us to be able to truly understand the signals that our bodies are sending us but if you drink enough water every day then you will know. You should be drinking 8 to 10 glasses of water a day (the glass should be 8 ounces).

Salads

Salads are a great and healthy meal choice. They are full of all the fresh vegetables that you need and they take a really long time to chew up which is first on our list of objectives. You should include any combination of carrots, lettuce, cabbage, cucumbers, tomatoes, celery, nuts, and more in your salad. Salads also have plenty of fiber and vitamins so you really get a big bang for your buck with salads.

However, don’t drown your salad in salad dressing. This defeats the entire purpose of eating a salad. Instead try a little lemon juice or some vinegar.

Oranges

Oranges are great for waking you up in the morning and contain good vitamins for keeping your immune system functioning well. Peeling an orange and eating one can be a slow process which gives your body again the time it needs to process what you are doing and keep you from over eating.

Brocooli

Broccoli has lots of vitamins and minerals that the body needs and again it also takes a longer time to chew. You can cook broccoli or eat it raw in a salad but either way you are going to have to take your time eating it which is why it’s included in our top 5.

Chocolate Candy Bars

It doesn’t really seem like chocolate should have made it on to this list, but it has. Hard chocolate bars have antioxidants but also help to fight the sweet tooth. Occasionally have a 20 gram chocolate bar and not only will you feel fuller, but you will also be happy that you got to eat some chocolate.

Now you must include other things in your diet as well. Variety is great. This list is just meant to get you thinking about the kinds of foods that can help you to lose weight and keep it off.
