A Brief History of Electric Shaver Brands

December 5th, 2009 Posted in Men's Health

The history of electric shaver brands is a long one and a brief summary in no way covers everything, but it can touch on some highlights. There were companies that lasted through the years by bringing great products to people…and there were others that got in over their heads and didn’t last.

Action Shave: Action Shave is a brand from way back in the’40’s. It is believed that this electric shaver brand was mainly distributed through mail order although not a lot is known about it or the company that manufactured it. We do know, however, that the main production and distribution center was located in Elgin, IL. It is also believed to have been made of Swiss parts, according to some historians of the area.

Clip Shave: Brought to you from Port Chester, NY, the Clip Shave sold for a whopping $10 in its day back in the’30’s. One feature that was distinct on this model and that the competition didn’t have, was a five foot long power cord. The length of the cord was unusual was time, and pioneered the longer cords that came in the future. It also came standard with a leather carrying case.

Packard: This name is synonymous with computers, but this company had nothing to do with the computer manufacturer – it was an electric shaver brand from the 30’s to the 50’s. Lektro Products was the company behind this one and introduced this pioneer model in’35. The shaver disappeared off the market in the 50’s and so did Lektro Productions, despite the popularity the brand had in its day.

Roto-Shaver: This brand was named after the firm that produced it and based in New York City, NY. Many remember it as the Lektro brand’s fierce competition at the time. It also disappeared in the 50’s along with them.

Vornado: Commonly confused with Vornado Air Circulation Systems, Inc., this brand was in no way connected to them. The company that owned this one was named The Two Guys Company and they stuck the Vornado brand name on a lot of different products, including kitchen appliances. No one knows if they ever had permission to use the name or not, but no record of lawsuits have been found.

These are just a few of the vast number of electric shaver brands that have been on the market in the past. Although these didn’t make it into today’s times, they set the standard for the industry. There ideas have been carried on and improved upon along the way to bring us the great shaving products we have available today.
