The typical meal for a person with diabetes should include foods from different food groups such as meats, cereals, fruits, vegetables, etc. You should consult your doctor or dietitian concerning this so that you will know how much you should take from each food group to put on your plate.

Fifty percent carbohydrates, twenty percent protein and thirty percent fats usually consists most diets for people who have diabetes. A combination of whole meal breads, root vegetables and others that can be found under the classification of complex carbohydrates may belong to this. This kind of food helps control a person?s blood sugar.

It is not advisable to include sweets such as cakes, candies, pastries and ice cream in a diet of someone with diabetes since a good amount of insulin will be needed when the blood sugar increases. Substitute fruits for dessert. Furthermore, sweets may also contain more calories than what you actually need for your body.

Before you use sweeteners to go with your diet, consult your doctor first. Saccharin and aspartame are very common sweeteners and while they are considered to have low-calories, it is still best to used them moderately or in small portions. These two are believed to carry natural sugars dextrin and lactose.

A well-prepared diabetic meal is very important for a person who is diabetic. Eating on time is very important and a roller coaster diet is a big no-no. Maintain your weight too by exercising regularly. This way your blood sugar level will not fluctuate and cause you more problems.
