OCD (Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder) and the Panic Attacks
Anxiety takes many forms and one of the most common is Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). OCD is sometimes looked at as a less than serious form of anxiety. This is because people assume that it is merely quirky behavior and not worth worrying about. However, OCD is definitely a serious condition and those that may suffer from it should definitely take is serious. This is even truer when OCD is combined with the onset of a panic attack.
Are wondering exact what OCD is? To simply state it, OCD is basically intrusive and reoccurring thoughts. So that the person can get relief from these thoughts, they are compelled to do several rituals to get their mind off their thoughts. What are the forms of these so-called rituals? The manifestations of the forms of these rituals are unlimited. It could be anything like excessively exercising, reading, or possibly cleaning. What is this impact? Essentially, the rituals begin to take over large parts of the person’s life. This means they can interfere with the individual’s ability to work or socialize. After all, if someone commits three hours out of the day to excessive exercise, the person is not really leaving much time to do much of anything else. Because of the somewhat irrational nature of OCD, it is not uncommon for it to co-exist with panic attack symptoms. For example, if a person feels the need to take part in a ritual but is unable to for any reason, a panic attack may ensue. When the rituals are intended as a means of alleviating intrusive thoughts, a panic attack might occur if the ritual cannot be performed.
It is bad enough just trying to deal with one anxiety disorder. But when you have 2 disorders that are being dealt with together it is even harder. The great thing is that there are ways now to control these disorders. If you get the OCD issues to subside, the panic attack issues get better too. Drug treatment is not always called for either for the individual to handle their problem.
One popular method of treating OCD is using behavioral modification sessions. These sessions work at limiting the reaction that a person has to the so-called triggers, which often make panic attacks to happen and to the rituals being performed. These reactions are from the relationship with an anxiety disorder.
This therapy has been proven to work on these conditions. So people suffering with these conditions need to look into it, for reducing the effects the condition has one them. The rate of success does depend on the severity of the disorder and what therapy is provided. For this reason each case has to be treated individually.
