Understanding A “Diet”

December 19th, 2009 Posted in Weight Loss

Dieting is one of those things that is completely integrated into the American society and most Americans are on some kind of a diet program, calculating their calories. By definition “diet” refers to what a person eats and drinks during the course of a day and many of these diet programs are well known. Here are some examples The Atkins Diet * The South beach Diet * The Zone * The Grapefruit Diet

What is the idea behind the diet. You are overweight and would like to shed some pounds. It takes only 3,500 extra calories to create one pound of fat in your body! So, if you take in just 500 extra calories a day, then you are gaining a pound of fat every week (500 calories x 7 days in the week = 3,500 calories per week). In today’s society gaining weight is effortless, an order of french fries or an Ice cream cone are 500 calories each. If you think about it, your body at rest, burns approximately 12 calories per pound of body weight per day, which means, if your weight is at 200 pounds your body uses 200 x 12 = 2,400 calories each day. 12 calories per pound per day is only an estimate.
