What Are Reagents

There are many uses for reagents and most of them include biomedical technologies that are used in helping humans detect and cure diseases. A substance or two substances create, measure or establish the existence of a chemical reaction with the help of reagents. The terms reagent and reactant can be used either way because of their symbiotic similarities. Chemical reactions happen when two or more reactants are combined together. Without reactants, there will not be chemical reactions since these substances start every chemical reaction. Chemical processes need reagents in the forms of solvents and catalysts to take place. Catalysts are substances that remain unchanged after chemical reactions but affect the rate the reactions happen. Meanwhile, solvents refer to certain gas or liquid used to dissolve another solid which results to another type of solution.

Reagents are also used in physical testing, chemical analysis as well as reactions. The purity standards of these reagents are usually set by ASTM International. For example, a specific reagent-quality drinking water should have relatively high levels of electrical resistance as well as low levels of certain impurities like that of silica, chloride, sodium, and bacteria.

Tools used in determining many different diseases and molecular biology research use many different types of reagents. Reagents also act as markers or signal detectors. Reagents become essential components of diagnostic tests along with other materials. Some of the uses of reagents are pharmacological uses, DNA extraction used in paternity and forensic tests, as well as gene mapping and creation of antibodies that serve as markers.
